Work done by Central England Quakers

We have several projects as Central England Area Quakers which we support with our time and money. Some of these are:

Asylum Concern
Run by members of Central England Quakers to support local asylum seekers.

Christmas Parcels
Early every December Friends gather at Selly Oak Meeting House on a Friday evening and Saturday morning to pack parcels for the families of prisoners and others facing hardship throughout the Central England Area. We aim to provide a parcel enjoyable for all races and faiths. Financial help is always welcome to pay for the parcel contents. Cheques/CAF vouchers made payable to – Christmas Parcels Appeal Please send or take any donation to:

Central England Area Quaker Office, Quaker Meeting House, 40 Bull Street, Birmingham B4 6AF. Donations may be handed in to the Central England Quaker Area Office at any time when the reception desk is open (Monday to Saturday 08.30 > 18.00 – closed on public holidays)

Coventry Peace House
Supported by Coventry Quakers it is a housing co-operative and a peace/environment centre in a busy part of multi cultural Coventry. It has been here since January 1999 and combines campaigning on peace and environmental issues with practical projects such as our cycling centre and WorldWise There are activity week-ends on the first full weekend of every month when volunteers are needed – it’s a great time to visit.

The Leaveners
The Leaveners is a national Quaker Performing Arts Organisation for the Religious Society of Friends in Britain. It was formed by a group of enthusiastic Friends, involved in the arts, who wanted to use their experience of the creative arts as a way of expressing their Quaker faith and values and it has been raising the creative spirit through theatre, music and drama in Britain Yearly Meeting since 1978.

Current work falls into three areas, the Quaker Youth Theatre, Quaker Music Making and Words, Signs & Vibes. The Leaveners receives special assistance from Central England Area Quakers.

Eco Centre Project
The Northfield Quaker Eco Centre project was approved by the then Warwickshire Monthly Meeting (which has become Central England Area Quakers) in 2007 and we hope it will open to the public in Winter 2008. It will serve as a community centre for information and action on environmental concerns.

Peace Committee The Peace Committee supports a meeting for worship at Croughton RAF base on the 4th Saturday of each month at 2 pm. It has assembled a directory of peace organizations active in the West Midlands.

The Priory Rooms
The Priory Rooms are the meeting rooms of the Bull Street Quaker Meeting House. They are managed as a limited company. Profits from letting these conference rooms is returned to Central England Area Quakers and supports Quaker work; charitable organisations can rent them at reduced rates. You can contact the Priory Rooms on 0121 236 2317. For details about concessions speak to either Amy Pearman on that number or contact Central England Area Quaker Office on 0121 236 2644

Quaker-Muslim Dialogue
This is an off-shoot of the Central England Area Quakers Peace Committee. It is a network of Quakers and Muslims who are interested in taking practical steps to improve relationships and understanding between Quakers and Muslims in Birmingham. All welcome–contact Chris Martin 0121 475 2088.

The Quaker Showkit
The Showkit is owned by Britain Yearly Meeting, but much of the support for its use comes from within Central England Area Quakers.

Quaker Peace Education Project
The West Midlands Quaker Peace Education Project was set up in 1984 in response to a concern of local Quakers. The staff work in schools, with staff and students, to promote awareness of all kinds of conflict, and to offer the means of resolution. This project belongs jointly now to Central England Area Quakers and Staffordshire Area Quaker Meeting. It is often called QPEP Its base is above our Meeting House in Dudley, and donations to support its work can be made direct to its offices or through Central England Area Quaker Office, Quaker Meeting House, 40 Bull Street, Birmingham B4 6AF. Donations may be handed in to the Central England Quaker Area Office at any time when the reception desk is open (Monday to Saturday 08.30 > 18.00 – closed on public holidays)

The Woodlands Home for the Elderly
A Residential Home and Sheltered Housing complex on one site, located in Penn, Wolverhampton. This is a haven of tranquility set in its own grounds and administered by Central England Area Quakers through a group of nominated trustees. There is a regular meeting for worship here on every Sunday (Penn Local Meeting), and very close links to the nearby Wolverhampton Local Quaker Meeting which is part of Staffordshire Area Meeting.
